Dear Friends,
Today is the day! My book’s birthday. Today You are a Tree makes its way into bookstores, libraries, and living rooms. I loved writing this book.
I hope you love reading it.
This book explores seven metaphors. People as trees, Wisdom as Light, Safety as a Stronghold, Love as a Sickness, Creation as Birth, Sadness as Weight, Life as a Journey. I draw each of these metaphors from scripture, ancient and lasting images of our interior and spiritual world. The book explores the way that the visible tangible world gives us language to the invisible and intangible realities which shape the course of our lives. In this book I write;
Metaphors matter because they give a voice to those profound experiences and concepts that evade us, because giving voice to those things is satisfying, clarifying, honoring, and humane. Because the metaphors we choose direct our orientation in the world.
The book’s subtitle articulates what I hope this book can offer its readers: nourishment for life, thought, and prayer. I hope that as you read it, you will be drawn into further awareness of the startlingly dense meaning stitched into every day life, that you will adopt more humane habits of speaking about yourself and the world, and that it will give you language to pray, praise, and lament.
This book has been many years in the making. To borrow a metaphor, it has been through many stages of labour before being born in the world: the writing, the editing, the promotion, but now it is born and shall take on a life of its own.
I send it out with excitement and trepidation.
I can’t wait to hear what you think.
Warmly,
Joy
P.S. I’ll be reading a section of the book on an Instagram Live at 5PM. Tune in!
